Chapter 5 Summary: Anne\u2019s Story<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As the journey back to Mrs. Spencer\u2019s orphanage begins, Anne decides she will make the most of the trip instead of dwelling on her disappointment. Knowing that Anne loves to talk, Marilla gently asks her to share the story of her life. Anne admits that she would much rather describe the exciting life she imagines for herself because it feels far more beautiful than reality. Even so, she agrees to tell the truth about her past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anne explains that her parents, Walter and Bertha Shirley, were both schoolteachers. Sadly, they passed away from a fever when she was still an infant, leaving her without a family. She was first taken in by Mrs. Thomas, a struggling woman whose husband was often drunk. Anne spent the next eight years helping care for the family’s children, as Mrs. Thomas mainly needed an extra pair of hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Mr. Thomas died, Mrs. Thomas could no longer keep Anne and sent her to live with Mrs. Hammond. There, Anne faced even greater responsibilities, looking after three different sets of twins. When Mr. Hammond also died two years later, the children were separated, and Anne was eventually sent to Mrs. Spencer\u2019s orphanage, where she had been living for the past four months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Anne had very little opportunity to attend school, she developed a deep love for reading. Books became her greatest companions, allowing her to learn about the world and fuel the vivid imagination that helped her cope with life’s hardships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Listening to Anne’s story, Marilla feels genuine sympathy for her for the first time. Anne, however, refuses to see herself as a victim. Instead of holding bitterness toward the women who cared for her, she believes they did the best they could under difficult circumstances, even if they were not always affectionate. Anne’s hopeful outlook and graceful nature make Marilla wonder if perhaps keeping her at Green Gables would not be such a bad idea. She begins to think that, with a little guidance, Anne could grow into a well-mannered and capable young girl.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 6 Summary: Marilla Makes Up Her Mind<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

When Marilla and Anne arrive at Mrs. Spencer’s orphanage, they explain that Anne was sent to Green Gables by mistake. Mrs. Spencer apologizes for the mix-up and assures them that everything will likely work out in the end. She mentions that Mrs. Peter Blewett is looking to adopt a young girl who can help manage her energetic children. If Anne goes to live with Mrs. Blewett, the Cuthberts would still be free to adopt the boy they had originally requested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, the suggestion leaves Marilla uneasy. Mrs. Blewett has a reputation for being harsh, miserly, and demanding toward those who work for her. The thought of sending Anne to such a home fills Marilla with guilt. Mrs. Blewett visits the orphanage to borrow a recipe from Mrs. Spencer. Anne is immediately frightened by her strict look and harsh manner. Noticing Anne\u2019s fear, Marilla decides to take her back to Green Gables. She says she needs more time to think about the decision..<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once they return home, Marilla discusses the matter with Matthew. Marilla says she will keep Anne if Matthew does not interfere in her parenting. She feels nervous about raising a girl but believes she understands children better than an old bachelor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Matthew is overjoyed by her decision. His only request is that Marilla treat Anne with patience and kindness. As Marilla reflects on everything, she realizes that keeping Anne will bring new responsibilities and unexpected changes into their quiet lives. She is especially surprised by how firmly Matthew supports the idea, despite usually avoiding involvement in family matters. Chapter 7 Summary: Anne Says Her Prayers<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As bedtime arrives, Marilla begins teaching Anne the values and habits she believes every child should learn.Marilla first reminds Anne to be more organized after finding her clothes scattered across the floor the previous night. She is even more surprised when she discovers that Anne has never prayed before going to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anne admits honestly that she has never learned how to pray. Still, she is eager to learn if it is important.She remembers that the orphanage teachers taught her that God is \u201cinfinite, eternal, and unchangeable,\u201d a phrase she found beautiful. However, she struggled to feel close to God. Mrs. Thomas often told her that God gave her red hair on purpose, which made Anne dislike it even more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Anne has mixed feelings about religion, she sincerely wants to please Marilla. Marilla is shocked that Anne has had no basic religious teaching. She decides to teach her the bedtime prayer, Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep<\/em>. Then she pauses, realizing the prayer feels too simple for a child with such a difficult past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of insisting on the traditional prayer, Marilla allows Anne to speak to God in her own way. Anne prays with deep feeling and imagination. She is thankful for Bonny, the geranium, and the \u201cWhite Way of Delight.\u201d She asks to remain at Green Gables and hopes to become beautiful one day.Ending her prayer in her own unique style, she politely signs off with, “Yours respectfully, Anne Shirley.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chapter 8 Summary: Anne\u2019s Bringing-Up Is Begun<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

The following afternoon, Anne eagerly asks Marilla if she has finally decided whether she can remain at Green Gables. Before answering, Marilla insists that Anne finish washing the dishcloth properly with hot water, reminding her that responsibilities come before rewards. Once Anne completes the chore, Marilla tells her that she can stay at Green Gables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Overwhelmed with joy, Anne bursts into tears of happiness. She promises Marilla that she will always try to be kind, obedient, and well-behaved, knowing these are qualities Marilla values greatly. Hoping to feel a sense of belonging, Anne asks if she may call her “Aunt Marilla” instead of “Miss Cuthbert.” To Anne, using the word aunt<\/em> would make Green Gables feel more like a real family. Marilla gently declines the idea and tells Anne to simply call her Marilla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marilla wants to prevent another awkward prayer lesson. She asks Anne to fetch the Lord’s Prayer and learn it by heart.When Anne does not return for several minutes, Marilla goes to look for her. She finds Anne kneeling quietly in front of a picture titled Christ Blessing Little Children<\/em>, completely absorbed in her imagination. Marilla mentions a nearby girl named Diana Barry, giving Anne hope that she may finally find a true companion. Curious as always, Anne immediately asks about Diana’s hair color, joking that she could never have a best friend with red hair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Anne then shares stories about the imaginary friends who helped her through lonely times.
