Scene 1: The scene takes place in the family shop located in the town of Skipley, where Danny Lodge, his younger brother Ben, their mother Mary, and their father Richard are currently attending to buyers.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Summary<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The store is a general store that offers common household items, and at that moment, there were threats of nuclear bombs being dropped by enemies in the vicinity. The residents of Skipley think that the threats are only bluster and believe that once leaders initiate diplomatic discussions, the conflict will soon resolve (the characters do not anticipate any nuclear strikes at all). At the start of the scene, Danny is recounting his life story, revealing that it has been quite grim (a terrifying event is about to unfold). A friend of Mary\u2019s, Mrs. Troy, is accompanied by her son, Craig (who is the same age as Ben, 5 years old), and they are talking about the prices. This demonstrates that prices are increasing due to the threat, with consumers eager to stockpile food for a long period; meanwhile, store owners are benefiting from the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the government advises citizens to stock up on food, and Mrs. Troy requests large water bottles. However, Mary reassures her that there won’t be any bombing because the shop is out of them. At this point, Danny enters, carrying a broken Game Boy, indicating that he would prefer to avoid his brother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The woman then brings up Old Kershaw’s Farm, which reveals their internal fears and suspicions of one another, along with the government\u2019s actions. After Mrs. Troy leaves, Mary and Richard engage in a conversation. This discussion discloses that they are stockpiling the large bottles for themselves and have already embraced a “survival of the fittest” mentality, where the best-supplied person survives. Meanwhile, Danny continues to familiarize himself with everyone. He expresses his disdain for Skipley and shows indifference toward it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
