Dear Friend,
I am hale and hearty here by the grace of Allah Almighty, and I sincerely hope this letter finds you in the best of health and high spirits. I was delighted to learn that you have passed your F.Sc. examination with distinction. Please accept my heartfelt congratulations on your marvellous success. Your consistent hard work and intellectual brilliance have truly paid off, and I always knew you would achieve such excellence.
Here we have a letter to a friend asking to lend books.
I am also free these days after appearing in my BISE final examination. Currently, I am staying with my grandparents in their native village. As a result, I am completely cut off from city life, libraries, and bookshops. While the peaceful environment here is refreshing, the absence of reading material has made my days feel unusually long and monotonous. I am keen to further refine my English language skills, but unfortunately, I have no books to turn to.
As E. B. White beautifully puts it:
“Books are good company, in sad times and happy times, for books are people—people who have managed to stay alive by hiding between the covers of a book.”
You have always been a passionate reader with an enviable personal library. Your love for books inspired me to develop the same habit, and I have benefited immensely from your guidance in selecting worthwhile reads. Thanks to regular reading, I have noticed a remarkable improvement in my vocabulary, expression, and comprehension. Indeed, “Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.”
Once again, I find myself in need of your kindness. Would it be possible for you to lend me Shakespeare’s plays, especially Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, and Twelfth Night? I would also love to read works by Jane Austen and Jane Eyre, as they are among my all-time favourites. Moreover, my Urdu teacher has strongly recommended Bang-e-Dara and Baal-e-Jibrail by Allama Iqbal. If you have these books, kindly send them as well.
These books will prove to be my finest companions in solitude and will also greatly assist me in preparing for my MDCAT entry test. I assure you that I shall handle them with utmost care and return them promptly after reading. I sincerely hope you will oblige me once again.
Please convey my warm regards to your family members.
Thanking you in anticipation.
Yours sincerely,
X. Y. Z
